Should fans be
worried about the Carolina Panthers offense? Yes its only week two of
a long season and yes the Panthers are 2-0 but the offense looks bad.
The Panthers currently rank 16th in points, 24th
in passing yards and 17th in running yards.
The Panthers have
offensive line problems, notably at the tackle positions. The center
and guards are great when they are all healthy. Cam Newton is coming
off shoulder surgery late in the off season that saw him only throw
two preseason passes.
Cam Newton has 2
touchdown passes and 1 interception and is completing 59.6 percent of
his passes in two games. Tight end Greg Olsen breaking his foot is a
hard blow to absorb for this Panthers offense that has already
struggled.
The new short pass
offense is not working too well even though Christian McCaffrey is
leading the team in catches with 9 in two game. McCaffrey is not
looking like a high first round draft pick at least so far. McCaffrey
has 21 carries for 57 yards and a 2.7 yards per attempt average.
Jonathan Stewart is only averaging 3.2 yards per carry himself.
Panthers fans love
to hate Mike Shula but he looked smart enough during Cam Newton's MVP
season. I think losing Olsen was huge but that the Panthers offense
will get better as Cam Newton gets more and more reps in the new
system. Still this team will go as far as the defense carries this
this year.
